Six Days in Ukraine (2013)
Uman is a Ukrainian city located in Cherkasy Oblast in central Ukraine. the city rests on the banks of the Umanka River. Every year, tens of thousands of Jewish Hasidic pilgrims travel to Uman to visit a Jewish cemetery, where Reb Nachman of Bratslav (1772-1810), the founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement, is buried. His grave is one of the most revered shrines of Hasidim, being the place of annual mass pilgrimage.
In the summer of 2013, I joined my hasidic mother on an organized trip to Ukraine. While she went to visit the holly landmarks and graves, I explored the outskirts of the places we came across, documenting the strangeness and beauty of what is left untouched, unholly to the Jewish pilgrims.
